BUNKER CALL - RoRo GRANDE ANGOLA at Malta - 21.03.2018. On Wednesday 21st March, 2018 the Grimaldi Lines ro/ro ship GRANDE ANGOLA loaded with vehicles entered Valletta (GrandHarbour), Malta for a bunker call by the Valletta Bunkers bunkering tanker SALINA BAY receiving 300 tons of fuel oil since Weather Conditions were extremely bad outside at a Bunkering Area.  (Westerly Force 7). Vessel was on passage from Golcuk, Turkey bound to Sagunto in Spain. The last time the vessel was in Malta was for drydocking at Palumbo Malta Shipyard Dock no 4 back to 2011. CASUALTY - 40 Years Ago - AMOCO CADIZ - 16.03.1978 On 16 March 1978, the very large crude carrier (VLCC)  AMOCO CADIZ  lost her steering in a Force 10 storm and grounded on Portsall Rocks off the coast of Brittany, France. As she broke up, the tanker lost her entire cargo of 1.6 million barrels of crude oil. The coastal areas in the vicinity were heavily impacted by the spill. After receiving limited compensation under the Civil Liability Compensation (CLC) and Funds Conventions, the Government of France brought suit in the United States against  Amoco Oil  Company, the parent company (twice removed) of the ship owner. The federal court awarded damages in favor of France, holding that the liability allocation and channeling provisions in the conventions were not applicable since the US was not party thereto. SALVAGE -  Tanker SANTA LUCIA at Malta - 16.03.2018. The 2009 built MLT flag tugboat SPINOLA left Marsaxlokk Harbour, Malta at 0851 hrs (0751 UTC) for  a position at Hurd Bank Area to start towing the 2003 built MLT flag and owned tanker SANTA LUCIA on Friday 16th March 2018 after an engine failure. She started towing the disabled tanker at 1000 hrs (0900 UTC) bound to Valletta to berth the tanker at the Ricasoli Jetty. While towage arrived at the pilot station at 1358 hrs (1258 UTC), a harbour pilot with another tugboat LIENI came out to assist to start entering Valletta - After SPINOLA shortened the tow wire towage started to approach the entrance at 1442 hrs (1342 UTC) - At 1503 hrs (1403 UTC) towage entered Valletta for Ricasoli - Photos by Capt. SHIP ARREST -  Rescue Vessel OPEN ARMS at Pozzallo, Sicily - 19.03.2018. Prosecutors in Catania have seized the rescue vessel OPEN ARMS operated by the Spanish NGO ProActiva Open Arms engaged in migrant search and rescue operations in the central Mediterranean. The vessel is currently berthed at Pozzallo after she disembarked 218 migrants on Saturday 17th March, having refused to hand them over to the Libyan authorities following two days of diplomatic negotiations. Three people have been placed under investigation, the captain, the aboard coordinator and the Spanish head of the NGO, for alleged criminal activities for illegal immigration purposes, human trafficking and association with human traffickers criminal rings. . The probe centres on the events leading up to the ship's arrival in Pozzallo on Saturday. Ships at Haifa, Israel in Week 11 of 2018. The following movements are covered by a friend at Haifa, Israel - Wednesday 14th March, 2018. The United States Navy Wasp Class Amphibious Assault Ship LHD 7 USS IWO JIMA entered harbour. Her previous call was from the 14th to 19th September, 2008. Thursday 15th March, 2018. 3 LCAC's (Landing Craft Air Cushion) from USS IWO JIMA LHD 7  exercised north of the new Mifratz Harbour near Kiriyat Yam. LCAC 47 - LCAC 71 - LCAC 85 - Friday 16th March, 2018. The United States Navy Wasp Class Amphibious Assault Ship  LHD 7 USS IWO JIMA  was still inside harbour. OFFSHORE -  CSV AETHRA at Malta - 22.03.2018. The 1999 built CYP flag construction support vessel  AETHRA entered Valletta (Grand Harbour), Malta for bunkering operations by tanker SALINA BAY on Thursday 22nd March 2018 while on passage from Greece to Newcastle, UK due to strong Westerly Wind Force 7.
